A member of the Solanaceae or nightshade family with potato, chili pepper and tobacco. Short lived perennial in its native habitat, grown as an annual in temperate climates. Pollination is reduced if day temperatures exceed 100˚F or drop to 50˚F at night. Determinate types usually have one flower cluster bear leaf node, while indeterminate types often bear only one flower cluster every third node. Variety groups most susceptible to crossing because of a style protruding beyond the anther tube allowing for cross-pollination by insects are currant tomatoes, heirloom, potato leafed and beefsteak varieties. An heirloom tomato can trace its history before 1951 or WWII. Late season varieties are recommended for zone 9 or warmer. I already loved growing vegetables, but taking a plant all the way through its life cycle felt like a special kind of honor, and I quickly saw the value in sustaining organic, important, and rare plant varieties and participating in sustainable food systems in this way. I moved to Oregon in 2015 and have been growing my organic seed farming business over the last four seasons by renting land from existing farms and slowly taking on higher volumes and more varieties. Byles in the 1930 in Logan West Virginia. Mr. Byles earned the name Radiator Charlie from the radiator repair business he opened at the bottom of a steep hill which trucks would often overheat on. He bred the this famous tomato by crossing four of the largest tomatoes he could find: German Johnson, Beefsteak, an Italian variety and an English variety. One of the four was planted in a circle of the others. Using a baby’s ear syringe, he cross-pollinated the center plant with the pollen from the others. The next year he selected the best seedlings, and planted the others around. He repeated this selection process for six years until he stabilized the variety. Mr. Byles sold plants for $1.00 in the 1940s, paid of the $6,000 mortgage in six years. People drove for 200 miles to buy his tomato seedlings. Mortgage Lifter fruit average 2-1\/2 lb, up to 4 lb., meaty and flavorful. We have found this variety to not be as great as its name. In Zone 7b we start in mid March to get to ripen to red, otherwise partially ripens to orange. Needs full sun and warm nights to ripen fully. Meaty solid center, few seeds, unusual for a beefsteak tomato. Balanced sweet acidity flavor. Donated to the SSE in 1995 by Alicia Brown-Matthes of Iowa. This variety was a favorite of Alicia’s grandmother, Mamie Brown. Alicia remembers seeing it growing in Mamie’s garden when she visited her grandparents in West Virginia during childhood summer vacations in the 1930s. Alicia received seeds of the variety from her aunt Louise, Mamie’s daughter. The family most often uses the fruit for canning and making juice. Best in dry climates, avoid over watering.
